It has been over two decades since The LOX dropped their debut album, Money, Power & Respect. But the album still holds great significance on the East Coast hip-hop scene. Its legacy continues to influence the next generation of rappers. Upon its release in 1998, Money, Power & Respect was regarded as one of the best hip-hop albums ever to come out. Moreover, ten years after its release, the effort still hit the “greatest of” lists. Particularly, its title track is listed in Vh1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop, ranking number 25.
Upon its release, the album peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200. It also topped Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Canada’s R&B Albums. In the U.S., it sold over one million copies and was certified platinum one year after it was dropped. Meanwhile, the album spawned several chart-performing hits, such as “If You Think I’m Jiggy,” which went to number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, and “Money, Power & Respect,” which hit number 17 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. The latter eventually was certified gold in the U.S. In modern times, the album also enjoys plenty of traction, as it has clocked in over 22 million streams on Spotify alone.
This 2023, as the album hits its silver anniversary, the influential hip-hop group, The LOX, will celebrate with fans at the Irving Plaza on Sunday, 24th September 2023. As it is a celebration of the album, fans can look forward to plenty of (if not all) songs performed on the big stage. The LOX is also highly likely to perform other iconic hits from their later releases. In 2000, they came out with the gold-certified sophomore effort, We Are the Streets, followed by Filthy America… It’s Beautiful, and their latest album Living Off Xperience was released in 2020.
So if you’re a fan of hip-hop, seeing east coast legends The LOX, comprising Jadakiss, Styles Po, and Sheek Louch, on stage at the Irving Plaza should be on your bucket list. After all, The LOX’s legacy is one of the pillars of hip-hop, and it would be a shame to miss this grand celebration.
