Natives of Orlu in Imo State located in the southeastern region of Nigeria, Kingsley Okorie and Benjamin James started out as choristers. In 2018, the sibling duo officially formed "The Cavemen", releasing their debut single "Osondu" by 2020. Kicking off a new era in the cultural Highlife music, they released their debut LP "Roots" in August 2020, fully produced and recorded in their living room. Garnering attention for their unique blend of Highlife, Afrobeat, jazz, and soul, it's no wonder why people are hooked on their masterpieces.
Praised for recreating highlife music while staying true to its essence, people have been drawn to the cultural renaissance that they started. About their sophomore album "Love and Highlife", writer Michael Chiedoziem Chukwudera praises their efforts in making this traditionally rich type of music appealing in the modern age.
He writes that the album is an "innovative effort to perfect the recreation of Highlife while remaining conservative. The combination of drums, trumpets, piano, and other supporting musical instruments creates a sound that retains the traditional essence of Highlife," praising how The Cavemen is innovators by heart, with love and philosphy at the center of their work.
Kicking off the "CAVY IN THE CITY TOUR", these fine men are taking these cultural beats to the city across the USA and Canada. With 14 shows on the list, they're bound to surprise audiences in major cities. About their music, "Highlife is Africa’s first experiment because it was influenced by colonialism," Kingsley told Music In Africa in an interview. "What we’re doing is furthering that experiment and showing the world our perspective."
About their live shows, it's more than just playing their tracks in a live setting. "We’ve always aimed to bridge the gap between recorded and live music. We want our audience to not only hear our album but also experience a different, yet equally high-quality version live," he says.
