When the name KMFDM is mentioned, it may not ring a bell to some new breed of rock-lovers. But the OG fans know that when this German band is mentioned, we are talking about Industrial Rock veterans who helped bring industrial music to mainstream audiences.
KMFDM or Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid (translated as "no pity for the majority") started as a performance art project in 1984 in Hamburg, Germany. Led by Sascha Konietzko, who also founded the band, KMFDM explores many genres of music, but they likely leaned toward Industrial rock and Electronic body. Their blend of strong metal guitar riffs, electronic music, samples, and male and female voices make them stand out from the rest of rock bands who play it safely.
In the early 90s, the band found success outside Germany. Their third studio album, "UAIOE," introduced the band to American and European fans. The title track, along with the songs "En Esch," "Ganja Rock," and Murder," among many others, became hits, which broadened the scope of their fanbase. The success of their first international album led to the peak of their success in the mid-to-late 1990s. With rotating band members, the band moved to Seattle and released several albums throughout the 90s. The most notable of which is their seventh album, "Nihil." The album peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and became KMFDM's best-selling album, with 209,000 copies sold.
Over the years, KMFDM cemented its name in the Industrial rock music scene. They have toured extensively in the United States and throughout Europe. They were able to release 23 studio albums, the latest of which are "Hyëna" and "Let Go," released in 2022 and 2024, respectively.
"Juke Joint Jezebel," "Light," "Megalomaniac," and "Krank" are some of KMFDM's hit songs. With four decades of making music, these are just a few of the many chart-topping songs fans associate with the band. And these songs, along with many others, will echo in the walls of Irving Plaza this March 9 as the Industrial Rock OGs will bring their 40th Anniversary Tour to New York City. If you are looking for a rock-filled, head-banging evening, this show is the place to be.
