“The Drama is what I like to call Opera Pop Rock. The rock n roll drive mixed with glamourized over-the-top lyrics makes you feel confident. If you were watching a movie of your life, wouldn’t you want to laugh and cry? What’s life without a little drama?” he shared about the album.
Releasing bops since 2013, Sutherland became a classic favorite in the indie pop scene. Known for his glamorous storytelling, his sophomore LP “The Drama” marks his most creative and immersive work yet. Inspired by Shakespearean narratives, the record packs an exposition, rise, climax, fall and resolution. With rock elements borrowed from the ’70s and ’80s, it’s a sonic experience that defies modern-day pop manufacturing.
Obsessed with rock operas, he’s turned his fascination with the classic tunes into something that became attractive to Gen Z listeners. “It’s basically following the story arc of me in my journey and my life,” telling Atwood Magazine how every track on the record was only written for the album, rather than writing a hundred demos and cherry picking the best. It’s a full story!
“Yeah, it’s basically the three acts, like in Shakespeare. I thought it was just a cool play on it,” he said. The first act “Welcome To The Show!” which is a “big, grandiose, overconfident, gaudy feeling,” with tracks that invite you into his musical wonderland. The second act “A Tragedy!” shares themes of heartbreak and some sadness. Then the third act “God Save The Dream!” wraps the record up on a high note — beaming with confidence on “Place Like This”.
