American emo group Sunny Day Real Estate was founded in 1992. As of now, the band is made up of original members Jeremy Enigk (vocals, guitar), Dan Hoerner (guitar), and William Goldsmith (drums); additional members include Greg Suran (guitar), who joined the group in 2022, and Chris Jordan (bass), who joined in 2000. The band existed in three different guises during the time of founding bassist Nate Mendel.
Despite not being from the Midwest, Sunny Day Real Estate was one of the founding rock bands of the Midwest emo scene, which they helped in creating. The group received positive reviews for their 1994 Sub Pop Records debut album, Diary.
But the band disbanded not long after they finished recording LP2, their second album. Lead singer and guitarist Enigk started a solo career, while rhythm section members Mendel and Goldsmith joined Foo Fighters.
Throughout their sporadic three-decade existence, Sunny Day Real Estate's members have been their own worst enemies despite producing incredibly influential, genre-defining, and emotionally poignant music like Diary and 1995's aptly named The Pink Album. A range of interpersonal dramas have led to three breakups and reunions as well as at least one abandoned album. After a 12-year hiatus, the band—still led by founding members Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner, and William Goldsmith—reunited to go on a tour in 2022.
In addition to being classified as an indie rock group, Sunny Day Real Estate has also been primarily categorized as an emo band and post-hardcore post-punk and post-grunge. The band has also incorporated grunge-inspired musical elements.
With almost 231,000 copies sold, Diary was the ninth best-selling album on Sub Pop in 2008. Diary also topped the Rolling Stone list of the "40 Greatest Emo Albums of All Time" in 2016. In 2013, LA Weekly listed Diary as one of the "Top 20 Emo Albums in History."
The band is set to go on tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut album. In the whole run of their tour, they will perform the entire album. After teasing a re-recording of the famous album, Sunny Day Real Estate may just surprise fans by including new elements to the album’s songs.
